Look, I don’t like to discuss politics much here. Not because I don’t enjoy politically-themed conversations, but because I don’t think the internet is the best place to have them. I know there are webspaces where well-informed people have passionate-yet-civil disagreements about important issues, but these places are the exception. So, you get little to no politics talk from me.
I did want to address one thing, though. I’ve been hearing a couple different God-related theories regarding The REAL Reason Donald Trump is the GOP nominee:
Donald Trump must be God’s chosen leader or he wouldn’t have gotten this far!
America is bad, bad, and God is going to punish us with Donald Trump.
Mike Pence! God loves Mike Pence and is smuggling him into office.
‘Kay. I’m not going to claim particular insight into the mind of God (religion is another thing I don’t discuss much here, for the same reason I don’t discuss politics). I will say that God does sometimes work in ways that are, frankly, rather mysterious, so I guess one of the above possibilities is, um, possible.
However, there is a God-related theory some members of the Christian right seem to be avoiding, and the closer we get to the election, the more it seems like fingers stuffed in ears, yelling, “LALALALALALALALA I CAN’T HEAR YOU!”
Here it is:
The Republican Party is bad, bad, and God is using Donald Trump to grind it into oblivion.
This may seem like an unnecessarily pessimistic option, especially to those of you – those of us, I should say – who have called (or who used to call) the Republican party home. But just because something is sad or depressing doesn’t make it untrue, and sad, depressing things don’t go away because we refuse to acknowledge them.
It is something to consider.
